Adults: beetles about 1.5 cm. length and red – brown, with green metallic scutellum in the case of Phyllopertha horticola, and hairy black for Melolontha melolontha. Membranous elytra used to fly are hidden under the first pair of higher elytra.
Larvae: develop just below the soil surface. They are grayish-white, with a very prominent brown head which became dark grey at the bottom. Larvae take on the characteristic shape of letter C.
